The
king was hunted in Rambouillet, Annie Duprat
In the weeks that followed the events of July
1830, a great many prints appeared, aiming at spreading the idea of the
unanimity of the revolutionary movement, and at disqualifying altogether
the image of the ex-king. The caricatures against Charles X -unknown for
most of them- describe a bigot and dumb king, sometimes pictured under the
form of various animals (crayfish, turkey, goose, giraffe, etc.). The political
show then becomes a grotesque menagerie. |

" Unforgiving (1914) " :
Adolphe Willette or propaganda by outrage, Laurent Bihl
A famous cartoonist since the "Belle
époque", Adolphe Willette published, during the first months
of World War I, illustrations of a rare violence, which were gathered
in 1916 in an anthology under the title "Unforgiving". Illustrating
the (often imaginary) atrocities of German troops against the civilians
in Northern France, these cartoons stand out against the production of
other caricaturists of the times (Steinlen, Poulbot), by their use of
grotesque, macabre cruelty and eroticism, to such a point that it is almost
surprising if the war office gave its agreement to them. This article
studies how outrage becomes a weapon under the cartoonists pen,
in the stigmatisation of German barbarities, mid-way between the tradition
of the satirical production of Montmartre "end-of-the-century-style"
and the emerging of a new imaginary of collective terrors, that pushes
the humour of the Belle époque period to its very limits.

Quelle évolution constate-t-on
dans les thèmes de propagande ?

Between German power and French power, James
Charrel
Cinematographic newsreels, between
1940 and 1944, raise the question of the coexisting of two propaganda
-French and German- on a same medium. Does the merging of two production
companies in August 1942 mean the taking-over by the Germans of the newsreels
? What kind of evolution can we observe in the themes of propaganda ?

On assiste alors à

Embodying the Républic, Christian
Delporte
Posters used to be a major medium in the making
of the image of the candidates running for the presidential election,
until the beginning of the 1990's, when the law constrained the use and
interest of them. Partly designed by advertisers and professionals in
communication (hired as soon as the 1965 polls), the image of the candidates
is based on a political strategy which is quite obvious in the iconography
they provide. This article studies -in a non exhaustive way- the posters
of the last three French presidents. If the issue is always the same -
to give oneself the image of an eligible leader- , the way of achieving
it greatly changes from one campaign to the other, in order to guarantee
the strongest adhesion of the voter. We then observe radical revolutions
of images, of which Jacques Chirac is an interesting example.

A death to the dailies, , Jacqueline Freysinet-Dominjon
A semio-rhetorical analysis of the redactional
spaces allotted to President Mitterrand's death on the FrontPage of daily
newspapers on January, 8th, 1996, displays -beyond the immediate function
of announcement meant for the large audience of an evening newspaper-
the variety of funeral portraits, according to the time of release of
the newspaper -the very evening or the morning after-, and the journalistic
style of each headline, president of the French Republic or hero of swashbuckling
novel, quiet force of the politic or fragility of the aged ill man. The
ten analysed daily newspapers can be classified in three major categories
according to their choices regarding two axes of representation : image
of the public man and the private man on one hand, ambiguity or transparency
of the character on the other hand.

Figures of vote, Michel Offerlé
We are now used to a few routines
of representing the act of voting : the ballot-box under the pen of caricaturists,
the coming out of the polling-booth or the putting into the -now transparent-
box, in the photos of the act of voting. By scanning suffrage on a long
term basis (from 1848 up to now), we wish to question what electoral images
teaches us, in their languages and constraints, about the successive and
contradictory representations of vote and voters.

partisane.

The militant communion : left-wing meetings
in the Nineteenthirties, Paula Cossart,
The study of political meetings held
by the radical, socialist and communist parties between the two World
wars, gives us evidence that the staging as entertainment shows became,
during these years, fully constitutive of the practice of public reunion,
staging of the Politic which cannot be dissociated from images and texts
editing. Whether the observation focuses on the spatial environment of
the meeting, on what happens on stage, or on the audience, it is clear
that if dramatic art is first prominent in the way the meeting takes place,
it then goes on, when the meeting is over, in the images and texts which
summarise the reunion. Once this point made, do we stick to the term staging
to apprehend these meetings, or can we speak of rite ? In order
to do so, we'd need to make out, through whatever reaches the observer,
what actually happened , and what is only a deforming reconstruction,
meant for a partial editing of images and texts.

Foules en liesse et " maréchalisme " des
populations, Nicolas Marriot
Or, le

Jubilating crowds and " marechalism "
of populations, Nicolas Marriot
This article, based on an edited
collection of newsreel archives showing Pétain touring throughout
the country, questions the reality of collective jubilation in the process
of testifying -in a profane or expert way- of a certain popularity. The
example is interesting in the sense that it reveals an expert use of ambiguous
images of jubilation, because it is linked to a reading made at the end
of the Vichy regime : the image is supposed to show a popular Pétain
in 1940, it is supposed to cheat in 1944, because the "maréchal"
can't decently be popular anymore. However, the problem comes precisely
from the fact that the image "shows" the same thing in both cases : collective
jubilation. The article comes to the conclusion that the operation of
analysis consisting in deducing the spirit of the participants from cheerful
behaviour, must be rejected in such a context because of its reductive
nature : exceptions to the rule are simply too numerous.

Les images font-elles encore image ? Danielle Tartakowsky

Do images still make image ? Danielle
Tartakowsky
Groups who "march" (rather than demonstrate),
often lack organisation adapted to their goals -whether punctual or permanent-
, and/or are willing to go beyond existing organisational divides ; looking
for an identity. By choosing marching in particular, the break in the
day time it requires as much as it provides, to build a new sociability
and therefore an identity, a community, an original mode of organisation
; or simply an image with a primarily intern finality. This article analyses
the solutions chosen by the actors of the European march of the unemployed,
organised in 1997, to answer the problem raised by translating these kinds
of movements into images.

From funeral homage to out-speaking, Emmanuel
Fureix
General Foys funerals started a new political
practice in censitarian monarchy, the burying of the opposition, where
mourning the great man and protesting against the regime are entwined.
The article sketches a political anthropology of gesture and death symbols,
in order to prove the sliding of an ordinary death march, ruled at the
beginning of the 19th century, towards a political pre-demonstration.
Historical borrowings and denials, piled up references, presence and withdrawal
of the people, show the paradoxes of a liberal culture of death. The article
also proposes a few keys for the interpretation of this moment of funeral
effervescence, between tribute to a great man, celebration of a representative
of the people, and expression of the public opinions judgement,
in order to highlight the catalysing effect of the ritual in the order
of practices as well as in political representations.

rituels politiques.

to make out what lessons it teaches us about the contemporary relation to

locale.

Of the past, let's make a show !, Maryline
Crivello
This article studies the genesis and construction
of a historical reconstitution that relates the meeting between Catherine
de Medicis and Michel de Notre Dame in Salon-de-Provence, in 1564. That
show, far from being carried by some collective memory, was born from
the publicity around Nostradamus in the 1980's. The pretext of a historical
event has however legitimated the yearly festival which, along the years,
has recomposed the memory of the encounter and of the prophet's image.
By inventing a new form of sociability and integration, the festival has
become a "must" for the elected local politicians as well as for the citizens.
It now is a political issue on a local scale.

History through cards : the impossible commemoration of the ISP, Caroline
de Loze
When it was just about to celebrate the 100th anniversary of
its founding in 1892, the Italian Socialist Party was caught in scandals
that led to its dissolution. From that aborted anniversary was left a
box in which was kept in facsimile the whole lot of membership cards with
a different illustration for every year -allegories most of the time-
that give an insight about the evolution of the visual propaganda issued
by the ISP. This article studies the cards that appeal to the militantsmemory
by evoking the great figures of the movement, the great steps of its history,
or, more largely, Italian and European history (French Revolution, Risorgimento,
Resistance). This detailed inventory of the themes and figures of the
" official memory " of Italian socialists show that
the commemorations, first focused, since the 1930s on " the
great men " of the party and the victims of fascism, as well
as on the celebration of the anniversaries of the movement and of its
organ, the daily newspaper the Avanti !, tend to spread, since
the 1980s, to the major dates of the history of liberties in Europe.
A government force under the aegis of Bettini Craxi, the party, which
seems to be seized by a commemorative fever that should have culminated
with the centenary of 1992, thus takes refuge in a memory outgrowing them,
a process that raises the issue of the relevancy of commemorative events.

The terrors of moderate France : the posters
of the centre of propaganda of national republicans between the two world
wars, Fabrice d'Almeida
Moderate right-wing propaganda during the period
between the two world wars, is marked by the work of the Centre of propaganda
of national republicans. The Thames and stereotypes on the posters published
by this group testify that moderate ideology was largely fed by anti-Communist,
nationalist and xenophobic extreme rights fantasies. So, political
moderation flirted with extremism, at the risk of losing its soul.

|
Propaganda and pictorial creation : the example
of the French Communist Party during the cold war, Lucie Fougeron
Whoever is interested in the putting into images of political messages
and actions is offered a remarkable point of view by the Cold War period
: the splitting of the world into two parts, the struggle between the
two great blocks is also a "war of images". The French Communist
Party, main western political organisation supporting the Soviet "camp",
was an active actor in it. In the general frame of a particularly intense
mass-propaganda, for which posters are the privileged media, the FCP largely
called on graphic creation. This peak of production of painted or drawn
posters moreover coincides with the promotion by the Communists head office
of a "singular pictorial school, inspired by the principles of socialist
realism and devoted to play a specific role in the ideological struggle
led by the FCP". If these two phenomenon differ in their principles
of achievement, they nevertheless compose a "communist iconographical
statement", marking an original phase in the history of putting into
images of the political activity of this party.

From the temple of Thémis to the house
of human rights, Claude Loupiac
When practically no law courts were
built in the years following World War I, French justice had to face a
serious crisis of growth since the beginning of the 1960s. Its real
estate patrimony, old, even decayed, was inadequate as regards the boom
of legal disputes. A phenomenon of judiciarisation of society started
then, due to changes in mentalities and conveyed by an increase of law
suits, the complexity of which was made worse by an inflation of legal
texts and regulations. The buildings erected between 1960 and 1980 could
not make good the deficits, and the end of the 1980s saw a decisive
policy of law courts constructions, when the Chancery became responsible
for the whole first degree jurisdictionspatrimony. This revival
of real estate policy by the Chancery was an opportunity to reorganise
the structure of the buildings and also to start thinking over the modernisation
of the architectural image of Justice. First, the traditional image of
an austere, powerful justice, distant towards the people and set into
traditions, will be replaced by the representation of a modern institution
with the adoption of the architectural style contemporary of the 60s
and 70s. But the loss of identity along with the relative banality
of these works of architecture, led the Chancery to change direction and
encourage architects to invent an architectural rhetoric specific to that
program while fitting it into its environment, so as to translate the
evolution of the judiciary practice. These reflections led, in the mid-seventies,
to the concept of a judiciary city, of which Draguignans law court
is representative, and then, more recently, to the concept of a transparent
" House of human rights ", representative of the constructions
of the last ten years. However, the assessment of these efforts leaves
one doubtful about the relevancy of the process.

Lil intelligent,

The choice of political images is actually submitted to numerous technical

to depend mostly on the way journalists and iconographs see the roles played
by political actors and the modes of staging

French
Communist Partys posters, Lucie Fougeron
The French Communist Party opened its head offices archives in 1994,
putting at the disposal of research a unique heritage with regards to French
political parties. In parallel with the treatment of these documents, an
important collection of illustrated posters, published by the FCP from 1945
